Technotip.org Guest Post Guidelines

After a year of blogging, I feel that it would be great idea to allow guest blogging on this blog. To learn from you guys. I have learnt a lot with the comment section, now its time to give you the main platform to share your knowledge. And to have a lot more conversation and build a great community around, helping each other.
We know the frustration of getting a first link to a new blog. To show others that you exist. And it’s a great boost for search engine ranking, if you can get a link from a trusted website.

Guest articles will mostly be published on Wednesday and Thursday. All other days(most of the days) we will be writing on this blog, as always.

Guest blogging is a great tool to show your presence, skills and to kick start your online business or to boost your already existing one.

Guest-blogging-guide

1. How-to articles.
2. WordPress and designing.
3. Strategies.
4. Web2.0
5. System related.
6. Mobile tips and tricks.
7. Social Media.
8. Own blogging experiences.
9. List posts
10. Tutorials etc.

Must follow, strict policy:
The article must be original. It must not be published anywhere else….online or offline(news paper, magazine etc). You will be held responsible for any dispute that may rise later.

What type of content is a No NO?
1. Hate stuffs – Abusing some company or product.
2. Product reviews.
3. Article with irrelevant links!
A link with in the article must support the article that is published on the blog and should not be another post that you are referring to readers to go and read.

Some personal guidelines:
Guest blogging is an opportunity to show your authority over a topic to a wider audience or new audience. So you need to make it as professional as possible, and not to include as many links as possible to drive the traffic. Its about spreading your brand recognition, showing your ability and willingness to be one among the community. Before submitting a guest article, make sure you do proper research about the topic, so that you can satisfy the readers and their comments.
Don’t view guest blogging as purely an opportunity for you to get new readers and promote yourself. Try to add value to the blog where you are writing the guest post. Take the opportunity to build the authority. People reading the article will surly visit you and be your loyal readers if they like the content and find that you are genuine, then they are more likely to stay with you, following your blog. Create good impression, leave with a positive impact.

Setup your blog/website in minutes: Install WordPress

WordPress is a free and open source blog publishing application and content management system. We can build a website and take it live in a matter of minutes. WordPress has made all the process so easy. Its simple interface and huge developer community adds to its beauty.

Both automatic and manual installation methods has been explained in this post. You can directly scroll down and follow the one that suits your requirement.

WordPress-logo

Many people have asked me about setting up a blog. They think that, they do not have any programing knowledge, so they can’t build and maintain a blog. That was right some years ago, but with WordPress its all made easy, to setup and maintain. I think, having just a bit of common sense is enough to setup and maintain a website/blog, that is powered by WordPress.

Many newbies get confused with wordpress.com and wordpress.org.

WordPress.org: is a place where you can download latest version of the software and install it on to your server (read on to know how to install it). So at first place, you must have purchased a web hosting account with FTP, database access or cpanel with Fantastico [Don’t worry of these terms now, you can contact us for any suggestion on choosing a hosting provider].
We recommend using Doreo Host, for its reliability and customers care.

WordPress.com: However easy-to-use is the open source package, there is still a barrier in that, it requires a hosting account, a database, FTP, etc making normal people like you and me dizzy. To bring the WordPress experience to a larger audience Automattic (company which owns WordPress.com) created WordPress.com, a hosted version of the open source package where you can start a blog in seconds without any technical knowledge.
But the main dis-advantage for many people is that, you will not get a personal URL. You need to compromise with the http://www.yourwebsitename.wordpress.com and you can not put ads on your hosted blog/website. And more importantly, you can not get 100% control over your blog/website.

Using the open source WordPress software, you can create a static as well as dynamic website using WordPress. We have seen college websites, company sites, government websites to popular blogs built using WordPress.

There is yet another WordPress software called WordPressMU, for multi-author blogs and we will talk about it in some other posts.

So self hosted WordPress is the way to go. And we are here to help you with the installation process.

So here is how you install WordPress:

Automatic Installation of WordPress, through cpanel of your web-hosting a/c

I. Fantastico: If you have cpanel, log into it. And see the Software/services section, for Fantastico De Luxe or simply Fantastico. Click on it.

(for http://yourdomainname.com/foldername Enter flodername only in the install in directory field). This directory SHOULD NOT exist, it will be automatically created.

Click on Install WordPress, to get the details of the automatically created database. And the directory where you have chosen to install WordPress. We recommend you to install your blog in the root, if you’re main focus is on the blog.

Notedown the username and the password for logging into your WordPress admin area. You can even save this details in your email.

If you have installed WordPress in the root directory, then your blog will be accessible at http://yourblogurl.com or if you have installed it in a folder by name blog, then your blog is accessible at http://yourblogurl.com/blog. You can log into your WordPress admin area at http://yourblogurl.com/wp-admin or http://yourblogurl.com/blog/wp-admin depending upon your installation.

Manual installation of WordPress:

II. Through FTP:
1. Download and unzip the latest WordPress package, if you haven’t already.
2. Create a database for WordPress on your web server, as well as a MySQL user who has all privileges for accessing and modifying it.
Log into your cpanel (Ex: http://yoursitename.com/cpanel ) and click on the “MySql Wizard” in Databases section.

3. Rename the wp-config-sample.php file to wp-config.php, in the downloaded WordPress package.

4. Open wp-config.php in your favorite text editor and fill in your database details that you noted down while creating the database(in step 2).

Replace the underlined info with your database name, database user name and database password(that you previously noted down).
Leave the ‘localhost’ as it is. Most of the time, it will be localhost itself.

Database-info

5. Go to https://api.wordpress.org/secret-key/1.1/ to generate secret-key. Now replace the “Put Your Unique Phrase Here” in the wp-config.php with the one generated at
https://api.wordpress.org/secret-key/1.1/ (Each time your installation fails or you want to reinstall, you need to generate new secret key).

secret-key

6. Save wp-config.php and upload all the unzipped WordPress files to either root directory or the directory of your choice.

My-ftp

7. Now open your web browser, and visit http://yourwebsitename.com/wp-admin/install.php (if installed in root directory) or http://yourwebsitename.com/foldername/wp-admin/install.php (if installed in foldername folder).

8. Follow the simple steps, enter your blog name, URL and email ID etc and complete the installation.

9. Log into http://yourwebsitename.com/wp-admin/ or http://example.com/foldername/wp-admin/ for your WordPress admin area.

10. You are done! Congrats. Play around for some time or some days to get used to WordPress. You may feel uncomfortable in the beginning, but it will be walk in the breeze experience, after you are used to it.

III. You can always send a support ticket to your hosting company and most of the time, they can help you with this.

IV. We can help you install it.

If you do not have cpanel and hence fantastico and you even do not have the FTP with your hosting account, then you must think of moving your website or blog to some other good web hosting provider.

Moving Your Website and Worried About Google! ? – Don’t Worry

If you are moving your old website to a new domain or from blogger to your own domain name. Make sure you follow these steps.

It’s very simple. (This helps only for webmasters who have submitted their previous website to webmasters tool.)

1. Setup your new domain.
2. Apply 301 redirect(from your old site to the new one). 301 redirect tells search engines that, the site have moved permanently.
To make the 301 redirects you can refer Apache Tutorial, if you are using apache server. It would be a safe thing to contact your web host before making any changes to your htaccess file.

3. Add your new domain to the WEBMASTERS Tool. Verify it.
4. Now in webmasters tool, select the old website and see the details.
5. In the left-side side bar, click on the “Site Configuration” and in the sub menu, you can see a link “Change of Address“. Click on it.
6. From here, every thing is self explanatory. Make sure you have followed all the steps mentioned there.
7. Now click on the drop down menu, in “Tell us the URL of your new domain” and select the new domain name. If your new domain name does not appear here, then you have forgot to add your new domain to Webmasters tool. Just add it and verify and again do as directed above.

8. Keep checking for the data regarding your new website. You can submit sitemap of the new website and keep watching for the indexing of the content.

Feedburner – Tips to add latest post’s title as Subject of email

Most awaited feature of feedburner is now live(without any official word!).
How it feels to see 10 to 20 emails with the same subject line/title and from the same person? Even if the content of the mail is different we get irritated to open it and read. Many times, when we are busy and want to clean/process the inbox, we just delete such mails.
email-subject-line
Feedburner used to send a static subject line with all the email updates. But now they have added a feature, using which we can customize the email Subject line and make it more meaningful.

Use ${latestItemTitle} to insert your latest post’s title into the Subject/Title of email.

If we have multiple blog posts?
With two or more items in the update, ${n} shows the total number of items, and ${m} shows the number of items beyond the latest.

Examples
Technotip.org: ${latestItemTitle}
Technotip.org: “${latestItemTitle}” plus ${m} more
Technotip.org (in this message: ${n} new items)
feedburner-email-title

To activate this, log into your feedburner account. Click on “Publicize” tab. Next, look for “Email Subscriptions(Offer feed updates via email)” link at the left side side bar, click on it. A number of sub-menu items will be shown, among them, click on “Email Branding” link. Now you can follow the above tips to customize the email title/subject line. Actually those tips are given by feedburner on the customization page itself.
Thanks Feedburner..also fix the chicklet count fluctuation problem!

If you are a blogger, make sure you make use of this feature and stop annoying your email subscribers!

Google has now announced about the introduction of this feature on Adsense for Feed blog.

How To Show A WordPress Post As Featured Article

This is a guest post by Amit Banerjee. If you want to guest post on this blog, check out the guidelines here.

Do you want to highlight something on your blog homepage as “Featured Article” ?
It may be some of your best content that is popular and you wish to highlight it. In some case you can show your blog contests or Your email Newsletter Service just above your latest articles(above the Fold).

A featured Section is basically an area where you want your readers to focus and “Call to Action”. Technotip.org uses a “Featured Article” section on the Homepage that showcases some of the best content published recently.
Featured-section

If you want to design a similar feature in your Theme then read on. I have described two Methods to Create the featured section for your theme.

Procedure A : This Method Is Simpler. It shows a particular(selected) article in your Featured section of the Homepage. But In future if you want to change and show another article, you have to manually edit your index.php file and change the ID of the post being called. This technique can be used, if you are planning to have an article permanently or for a long time in the featured section.

Procedure B : This Method is a Bit Geeky. But its actually worthwhile. This procedure is used, if you want to show a latest post from a Particular category (or tag) in your Featured section automatically. You just need to Tag your post and the postlist plugin does rest of the job for you!

Procedure A
Step 1: Create a Back Up Copy of your Template : Always create a back up copy of your original theme. If things go wrong, you can restore your Theme using the backup. Use any FTP client ( I recommend using FileZilla ) and download the current theme of your Blog to your computer. Create a copy of that Theme and work on the customizations that we are going to discuss in this article.

Step 2: Upload the WordPress plugin and activate it Download the get-a-post WordPress plugin and upload it to your wp-content/plugins directory. Activate the plugin. No customizations are required.

Step 3 : Write a new post that you want to show in Featured Section If you want to show something static in your featured section, then you need to create a new post and publish it in a back date. This will prevent your article from appearing in the homepage as a repetition[duplicate copy]. Note down the ID of the post. You will need it later on.

Hover your mouse pointer on the published post(in the wp-dashboard) and see at the bottom(status bar) for the article ID.

For example :
You may wish to show a Newsletter Service or Some Freebies In your Featured section. In that case create your new article and publish it in a back date.

Step 4: Customize your index.php The index.php file is responsible for showing your Homepage. Open Index.php file in any HTML editor or Notepad and find the following code

<?php if (have_posts()) : ?>

Add The following code just Before it..

<!-- The Intro section.Start editing -->
<div class="intro">
<?php get_a_post(ID); ?>
<!-- Replace with the Post ID that you want to show -->
<h1><?php the_title(); ?></h1>
<?php the_content(); ?>
</div>
<!--The Intro section ENDS.STOP editing here -->

See this Screenshot for Better Understanding :
Featured-section-coding
Remember to replace ID, with the ID of the post that you wish to see in your featured section.

What we are doing here : We are creating a separate class called intro, that would contain your Featured section’s styling(CSS). And we are using the get_a_post plugin to call a particular post in that section. This Section will be called just before the array of posts that appear in your homepage. Its placed ahead of the Loop.

Note:
A word of caution:
Here we are using the class as “intro”. Check Your template, if you are using the same class name already, then it may mess things Up. In that case Simply use a different class name.

5. Style Your Featured Section: Ok All Set. Now you Need to Style your featured section and add Width and Height parameters.
Open your Style.css file and add the following code:

.intro{
margin:0px 0px 30px 20px;
padding:10px;
border:1px solid #CCCCCC;
width:570px; /* EDIT THIS WIDTH */
height:200px; /* EDIT THIS HEIGHT */
background:#F4F7FC; /* background color of the box */
}

You have to customize the CSS of your Featured Section according to your template. It involves modifying the width and background colors, padding borders etc. Make sure to adjust the width and height of the box or else your featured section may break up.

6. Upload the New theme In Your Themes Directory and Activate it You are ready to shoot. Upload your theme and See the Difference.Your Homepage will show your featured section. Test your featured section. Change the heights, width or other parameters and make sure your featured section looks clean and neat. You may want to use Firebug(addon), its Brilliant for testing Designs.

Procedure B
Back up your Template: Please create a back up copy of your original theme, so if things go wrong you can restore your theme to its previous state.

Step 1: Download the postlists WordPress plugin and activate it.
Step 2: Log in to your WordPress admin panel and Create a unique Tag (say “Feature”). You will be Using this particular tag to show a post in the featured section. So use them only on those posts that you want it to appear in the “Featured Section”.
Step 3: Select Postlists Under The Posts Menu and Create a New List.Name It “Feature”.
Step 4: Start Editing Your List. At First Define a placeholder for your list. You will call this placeholder from your Index.php file.
place-holder
Step 5: After that, you will see two boxes each for html codes before and after the list. Keep both of them blank.
place-holder-blank
Step 6: Next you will See “HTML code for each entry”. Paste the following code in the Box Provided. A typical HTML entry that shows one of your article:

<div class="post" id="post-<?php the_ID(); ?>">
<p><h2><a href="%posturl%">%posttitle%</a></h2></p>
<?php the_content(''); ?>%content%
</div>

Step 7: Select the minimum and maximum number of posts to show in your Featured section. If you want to show only 1 post then select one in both the cases.
number-of-article
Step 8: Select The rule “Show Only Posts of this Category”. Keep it Blank.

Step 9: Select The rule ” Show Only Posts of this Tag”. Select the Tag that you created in step 2.( In this example its Feature.)

Step 10: Select the Rule “Show only Posts With this status”. Use “published” as the option.

Step 11: Select the rule “Show only Posts With this type”. Use “Posts” as the option.

Step 12: Leave All other rules as Blank. See the screenshot below and study it carefully.
plugin-settings
Save your list. You are done Configuring your list. Whenever your list is called, it will show a latest post of the tag that you have specified in step 2.
Step 13: Now you need to call your list in the desired area from the Homepage. Open your Index.php file and look for the Following code:

<?php if (have_posts()) : ?>

Add the following code just before it:

<div class="intro"><?php if( function_exists("pl_postlist") ) pl_postlist("Feature");?></div>

Please note that, we are calling the placeholder that we had created in Step 2. (In this example its “Feature”)

Step 14: You have to Style your Featured Section. Note that we have Kept the Featured section under a Unique Class “Intro”. Add The following code in your Style.css

.intro{
margin:0px 0px 30px 20px;
padding:10px;
border:1px solid #CCCCCC;
width:570px; /* EDIT THIS WIDTH */
height:200px; /* EDIT THIS HEIGHT */
background:#F4F7FC; /* background color of the box */
}

Modify the Intro Style as per your need so that it blends with your theme. Please be careful: If your Template already Uses the Class “Intro” then this would override the already described class. In that case simply replace the name Intro in step 13 and 14 with some other Unique name.
Step 15: All done. Upload the new theme and activate It. Select a post from your archives and Tag it with “Feature” tag. Now browse your new theme. You will have your new featured Section ready.

Some rapid questions[FAQ]:

Q : I want some of my Best Content In the featured Intro section. How do I change the Posts ?

Somebody’s gain should not be your loss – atleast in blogging

This is a common perception in the minds of many amateur business people. They always concentrate on the loss and gains of others. This is a good practice if you are investing in share market. But it’s bad, if overly done in any other business. We must concentrate more on our loss or gain.

Loss and gain in Blogging:
It’s the beauty of blogging that, some one may think something as a loss but the same thing may seem to be a gain for the other. It’s all how we think.
For Example:-
If you are running a blog and one of your friend also starts a blog with the similar niche as yours. In such a case different people think differently. Some may think that his friend will be his competitor in the future. And some other may feel happy that you may get a business partner in the future.

Situations where someone’s gain is not and should not be your loss:
1. Linking to other bloggers: Be generous while linking to other bloggers. Do not hesitate. Just make sure that you are linking to the relevant content that your readers will be benefited with. There is a big SEO advantage in linking to the relevant content.
Never feel that, if you link to other blog, you will loose the visitors, to the linked blog! This is not true. Your visitors will surly comeback if you provide value orelse they will surly not, even if you don’t link to others.

2. One click on other blogs CPC ad, is not a click less on your blog:-
I have seen some people guiding wrongly about ad placement. They think that one click on others CPC ad will be a click less on his ads! It’s too foolish to think like that. If a visitor finds something interesting and useful in those ads, he will surly click on it, irrespective of the website he is in. And you may think, if he visited your site and saw the same ad before, he might have ended up clicking on your ad. This argument seems to be true, but remember everyone has an abandoned interests, needs and wants. Have you ever seen a normal person with no interest, needs and wants? Probably not. So I don’t think one click on others CPC ad, is one click less on yours.

3. A newbie gets more subscribers then yours:
If a visitor likes your site he will surly subscribe otherwise surly not. It has no connection with other blogs. If you are able to win the heart of your visitor by providing value or by solving certain problem, then you can surely expect to get some loyal readers. Now a days there are some simple, effective and powerful tools like Google Reader, where reading hundreds of blog contents is so easy and less time consuming. So need not feel any other blog as a threat to yours, as long as you provide value to readers.

4. Sharing your idea’s with others, will reduce your chances of success ? :
“If two people exchange 1$, both will have 1$ each. But if they exchange 1 idea, both will have 2 ideas each”.
By sharing ideas you become more accountable – Share your ideas liberally. The benefits from accountability and feedback outweigh the risk that someone steals your idea!
*But be careful with whom you are sharing your ideas with. Do not share with people who specially exist to harm you! Discuss your thoughts and ideas only with trusted people.
By sharing your ideas, you will get valuable feedbacks. Sometimes you may come to know that, what you thought as an innovative idea is infact a crappy idea and would lead you to failure and loss. More about benefits of sharing ideas @ Link Love for Commentators.

Blogging should always be enjoyable. If we do not enjoy blogging, then there is some problem to be addressed! All bloggers or the bloggers in similar niche should get united and support eachother in getting success.
