Do you think a good title makes any difference in traffic?

Title is not important, but its crucial.

When you finish writing an article, its better to check whether the title of the post is actually what you have talked about in the post. And make sure that the Title is eye catching.

I would recommend spending more time in crafting the Title of the article. Once you finish writing the article, read the article completely and then again read the title of the article. Make sure that the title says whats in the article. If you just write the Title, to make it look interesting to your audience and forget to include proper keywords in it( or if you use the wrong keywords in it) then your article will not be shown in starting pages of search results of search engines, so again that article won’t receive traffic. So take care that, you make the title interesting as well as (relevant)keyword rich, so that you get long term benefits from search engines as well as from Social media, Social networking and Social bookmarking sites.

You can develop writing good Title skills by constantly practicing it on every blog post that you do.

Think of the benefits that you are going to get, from all around:-

1. Search engines will display your title in the search results, if its interesting then there will be more people visiting it.

2. If you promote your article in Social Media, Social Bookmarking and Social Networking sites, then title is almost the deciding factor, to get high traffic or to get almost negligible traffic.

3. Title makes your RSS/email subscribers to visit your blog and to involve/participate in the discussion going on in the comment section.

4. Attracts other bloggers to link to your article. And whenever people link to your article, they use your title as the anchor text and will usually use your title to point their readers to you.

5. Some people will tweet about the article and will share it with their friends and their friends will share it with their friends, if the article headline is really interesting. But I am sure that only 2 or 3 among 10 to 15 will really read the article!
Title-Traffic-Heading
So I could have used  killer blog post titles or The secret to get heavy traffic for this article — But it isn’t a secret anymore. We all know it, but we are just a little bit lazy and/or forget to invest time to craft a better Title. And in some cases you might have tired by writing a long post and you are in a hurry to hit the publish button, to see the reaction of your readers. But remember, invest more time in crafting the Titles also, its worthwhile thing to do. You will have almost 4 times more success with that post, if you write compelling Title.

While we are clearing our emails, sometimes we don’t follow the order in which they have been received. We will sometimes pickup the interesting one, based upon its title. This fact was discovered by Spammers long back, so they started using titles like “You Won $100000 in lotto” etc. But in this case, the content of the email is not true, so people started not reading emails with such titles. Similarly, if you write an interesting Title and if the article doesn’t actually deliver the requirement then such (nice) titles will do much harm then any favor.

An offline, life example:
Here is a story of a blind Boy, who started getting good donation, after changing the sign board statement:
A blind boy sat on the steps of a building with a hat by his feet.
He held up a sign board which said: ‘I am blind, please help.’
There were only a few coins in the hat.

A man was walking by.
He took a few coins from his pocket and dropped them into the hat.
He then took the sign board, turned it around, and wrote some words.
He put the sign board back so that everyone who walked by would see the new words.

Soon the hat began to fill up.
A lot more people were giving money to the blind boy.
That afternoon the man who had changed the sign board came to see how things were.
The boy recognized his footsteps and asked, ‘Were you the one who changed my sign board this morning? What did you write?’

The man said, ‘I only wrote the truth. I said what you said but in a different way.’
What he had written was: ‘Today is a beautiful day and I cannot see it.

Do you think the first sign and the second sign were saying the same thing?

Of course both signs told people that the boy was blind.
But the first sign simply said the boy was blind.
The second sign told people they were so lucky that they were not blind.
Should we be surprised that the second sign was more effective?
This is an effective real world example of how the human brain works in its conscious or sub-conscious state.

Some times ago I wrote an article(it was a kind of breaking news, which was already broke by some bloggers!) i.e., I saw that Google Analytics and Adsense integration was officially announced on Analytics blog. So I hurried and wrote about it on my blog. After writing the post, I just felt that I need to do something extra, so I just invested a minute more and wrote an interesting Title, which had all the keywords(to rank in Search Engine) and to attract the people to click on the Title and read the post. The Title was, “Feature Rich Google Analytics Gets Richer By Integrating Adsense ($)”. It received a lot of traffic from social Media sites at that time, and it still receives some traffic from search engines. (It didn’t hit the front page, because the news was not totally unexpected).

And as a counter proof, most of us read news papers every morning. And almost 99.9% of people won’t read the news paper entirely without leaving any words! Most of us read the titles and read most interesting things completely. And read some part of the news which are less interesting. And some times, heading itself is enough to read, no need to read the entire story.

This ensures that Title of an article is not only important, but also crucial.

So lets concentrate more on writing compelling titles on our blog. I will first practice this on my blog and let me write an article about how to write a compelling title, in the future.

Over to readers, please share your thoughts about the importance of the Title of an article.

Traffic Strategies PART 4: Promote stories which link to you

Digg, stumble, (share/Vote) those stories on the web which link to your blog homepage or to any of your articles. Vote for it, if its really interesting. If its just a bulk link back to many sites, then you will be hurting your reputation by voting or sharing such stories, as it will not be an interesting thing for others to read(in social book marking sites).
Following this strategy, you get traffic indirectly to your blog. Atleast people will read your blog title or URL in the article you Digg or stumble or Buzz! or to whatever site you submit the story. This brings their attention towards your website URL or its name, the next time when they see your blog title/name or URL(which seems to be familiar to them).
Google-blog-search
And its also good for your Digg, Stumble, Buzz etc profiles, if you submit stories from different URLs.. As all these networking sites have some tracking systems to track the self promotion and they may even ban or suspend(temporarily or even permanently) your blog URL(and not just your profile!) for submitting all the stories from your own blog.

Following this strategy would increase the (referral visitors) visitors trust level as someone is linking to you, and there is every chance of them becoming your loyal readers, if they like your blog for some reasons.

This strategy is not a “get heavy traffic over night” trick. This will bring in some quality readers to your blog over time.

This is one of the strategies that has worked so well on our blog. And be cautious while submitting stores that link to your blog. See that you don’t over do it and/or only submit stories when someone links to you. This will surly annoy your followers in social book marking sites as well, and you may endup with no followers.

Be smart, use this strategy once in a while and be active in all sites where you share/promote good stories on the web.

Traffic strategies: PART 2(Add RSS feed signature to your emails)

We write emails to our friends, relatives, anonymous people around the world etc. Many of the people with whom we communicate may already be knowing about our blog and there is a high chance that they already are our subscribers.
But still adding RSS feed signature or adding the “Headline Animator, which displays rotating headlines” will bring some traffic to our blog, as it shows our old article titles and they might be interested to know more and they may endup clicking on the title and visiting your site. Anyway, adding a small piece of code doesn’t hurt or take a lot of time.

Technotip.org

Feedburner has got this feature and you can integrate the small piece of basic HTML code to get the animated banner. But the limitation here is, you can see only five most recent items cycling through your feed’s. To over come this you can use some other RSS widgets, but while selecting see that these widgets are created only using basic HTML(for faster loading and user experience).

To use Feedburner animated banner feed as your email signature in Yahoomail, follow these simple steps:-
yahoo-signature
1. Log into your Yahoo! mail.
2. Click on Options.
3. In the “Management” section, click on the Signature option.
4. Drag and drop your Feedburner animated banner and click on “SAVE“.

If you want this email signature in Gmail, then you have to take some more steps:-
Gmail currently doesn’t allow us to add HTML codes directly into emails. But there are always some workarounds to get our work done!
Actually, you can over come the Gmail signature limitation by using Gmail’s POP3/SMTP features by making use of standard email program (Outlook, Thunderbird, etc.), create a signature in that email program that has your Headline Animator in it, and send your emails through your Gmail account. This is an easy task for those who are already using Outlook etc software.

But for people who are not using such email programs and who are not willing to use such things, there are some other solutions:-
To use the animator in Gmail, all you need is the “Better Gmail” Firefox extension. It adds a check box in your gmail account settings to enable HTML. Remember you must be using “Mozilla Firefox” only to get this to work.
I think everyone needs to give this Firefox extension a try. It also adds many cool features to your gmail, like:- Add Google Calendar link, Add Google Reader “Feeds” link, Air Skin, All pages’ mailto: links compose in Gmail, Attachment Icons, Attachment Icons (Bigger!), Conversation Preview, Attachment Reminder(now integrated in Gmail by Google), Date Search, Filter Assistant, Fixed Font, Folders4Gmail(Great isn’t it?), Force encrypted Gmail connection (https), Forward Thread, GrandCentral Voicemail, Integrate Google Reader, Mail.app(Mac-like skin), Show disk usage as progress bar, Signature Settings: Float/HTML/No dashes, Smart Read Button, Super Clean Skins, TinyURL selected link (Cmd+Shift+T), Unlabeled Message Search etc etc etc etc… So here is the link to download “Better Gmail”.

Drag and Drop:-
One more option to use with Gmail, Yahoomail, hotmail or anyother mailing service is, just drag and drop the widget at the bottom of your email and it will be working fine. But it requires you to do it manually all the time you send an email. Many people follow this simple drag and drop work, as this would provide us with the option of when to add and when not to add the email signature(with feed banner).
Copy the HTML codes generated in Feedburner(animated banner creation) and paste it in a notepad and save it on your hard disk with file name ending with .html. Run it(by clicking on the html file) whenever you write an email. Now drag and drop the animated banner into your email. Its that simple..

It seems like- “this method will not bring any traffic”, and its partly true. As you will not get heavy traffic out of this method. To get more traffic, you must be active in mail groups like yahoogroups, gmail groups etc and you should be sending interesting emails to a group with large number of users. This will surly bring some traffic, as people may forward that email to their friends and then their friends may mail it to their friends…like this, your email(along with your email signature) will reach many people and you may get many visitors and they may even signup to your RSS/email feeds and may become your loyal visitors(but please keep your fingers crossed!). Do not expect a heavy traffic from this method, which dries up your blogs bandwidth.

And another thing I want to mention here before ending this article, is, never think that your emails are marked as SPAM because you are using some HTML codes in your email messages. This will not happen, as today’s email systems has gone far from the basic text, to a high multimedia messaging. So no email service provider is going to mark you as a SPAMMER, for using some basic HTML in your email.

Traffic strategies: PART 1

There are many strategies to get traffic to our blog.
Today lets see some other hidden and effective technique to get the traffic, that we have experimented with and have been proven to be effective on this blog.
Using Ad Networks to get the traffic!

There are many strategies to get traffic to our blog, like

Today lets see some other hidden and effective technique to get the traffic, that we have experimented with and have been proven to be effective on this blog.

Here it goes:-

Using Ad Networks to get the traffic!

Yes, we have put Bidvertiser ads(an adnetwork which places the ads of highest bidders) on this blog, which have bought many visitors(who are advertisers) to Technotip.org.

traffic-blogging

We are also using “Project Wonderful”, which is a CPD(Cost Per Day) adverting program. And we have set 0.01$, per day for advertising on 125×125 ad spot. This has bought a lot of new readers, who keep coming to this blog to see for new contents and to bid on the adspot whenever there is a post getting more traffic.

Project Wonderful is also based on bidding system, so setting the minimum bid to 0.01$ is not at all a lose. Advertisers will bid more and more as the blog becomes famous. And there will be traffic flowing in, as advertisers will keep searching for the least amount to bid. They will endup to our site by searching for below any value and above 0$. By this technique our blog is shown in almost all search results.

Bidvertiser provoid 20$ for free when anybody signup as their advertiser for the first time. So our visitors get a chance to display their advertisement on this blog upto 20$ for FREE. This offer from Bidvertiser attracts many readers to stay around us to get such offers.

And as we all know, AdSense also has the option of targeted advertising. That is, targeting specific website/blog for advertisement. This also brings some more traffic.

But care should be taken not to dump the blog with just ads. People will be visiting our blog for reading the valuable content and not to see or click our ads!

More over, the advertisers, advertise on our blog, if they are interested in that niche and the advertisement is somewhat relevant to the niche.

So far Technotip.org has managed to get many readers from this technique. And more importantly these readers will be having the capacity to purchase things from your/our advertisers. “As advertisers are looking for good conversion and not for clicks”. So we can call these readers as potential readers of our blog.
