Mobile Web Design – Avoiding Universal Errors

This is a guest post by Spinx Web Design. If you want to guest post on this blog, check out the guest post guidelines.

Errors or Mistakes usually happen because of deviation from the standard. When it is about mobile web design, the perception of the designer is usually considered to be the main cause for the mistakes. The mistakes can be minor, small or even big depending upon the effort and money required to resolve it as well as the extent to which the losses occur because of that mistake. Some of the most common errors made by the designers when designing mobile websites are as follows.

mobile-html5-css3-error

1. Necessary Content: The mobile web design should have only the content that is necessary and can be displayed on the mobile screen. It should not be a copy of the content of the website that is designed for the desktop computers.

2. Load: If the mobile website is heavily loaded it may take a longer time to download and this could prove to be an irritant for the visitor.

3. Ignoring HTML5 and CSS3: Coding the mobile website with HTML5 and CSS3 can optimize the speed of downloading. The need of images can be reduced when the coding is done with the help of HTML5. CSS3 coding can offer rounded corners and gradients.

4. Width of the mobile device: When the mobile web designer does not take into consideration the width of the device it is possible that the elements may turn out to be not legible. This may happen because the elements have not been formatted to adjust to the width of the mobile device. This issue can be resolved with a simple HTML coding.

5. Downloading String: If the downloading string is not displayed on the screen of the mobile device the visitor may not know whether the action is being executed or not. The dilemma may compel or tempt the visitor to move to another mobile website.

6. Responsive web design: The mobile web designer should design a responsive website that is not only user friendly but also gets adjusted to the screen size and technicalities of the mobile device.

7. Home Screen: The home screen should be set in such a way that the screen does not look cluttered and illegible.

8. Excess of imports: When the designer uses AJAX framework like MooTools and jQuery, the import of data from the server becomes necessary and this can increase the duration of downloading time.

9. Images: The mobile website should have only the images that are required. Unnecessary images can add weight to the website and this could adversely affect the downloading time.

10. Size of the Finger: The touch screen is now becoming a regular feature of the mobile phones and this means that the mobile web design should be such that it can be navigated through with the help of the finger tips. The icon size should not be very small.

11. Form filling: The mobile web design should have short forms to be filled. If the visitor has to form long forms then it can irritate him/her. On the other hand the forms have to be designed keeping into consideration the facilities offered through the keyboard.

10 Truths You Should Know About Seasonal Depression

This is a guest post by Matthew Wainscott. If you want to guest post on this blog, check out the guest post guidelines.

Do You Experience Seasonal Sadness?

‘Tis the Season to be…Melancholy?
Although the holidays are typically considered to be a joyous time period, the autumnal and winter months are not jolly for everyone. The arrival of long nights and cold weather causes many people to begin to feel increasingly sorrowful. When compounded with decreased sunlight, the weather changes can cause many folks to experience what is known as seasonal depression disorder.

Winter

What causes this increase in sorrow to occur?

Dr. Norman Rosenthal is a world renowned psychiatrist who specializes in this unfortunate phenomenon. In 1984, Dr. Rosenthal discovered that many people experienced similar depressive symptoms during specific months. By using a treatment called light therapy, the doctor was able to relieve many symptoms that patients experienced.

What is light therapy?

Light therapy can be administered either through ultra-violet exposure or suggested behavior management. The way in which the therapy works is by providing Vitamin D to the body and maintaining the proper amounts of this vital element.

Research conducted at the Harvard School of Public Health indicates that inhabitants of regions north of the 37th parallel are likely to not receive sufficient amounts of Vitamin D. Cities that are within this area include: San Francisco, Philadelphia, Athens, Beijing and any city between and to the north.

In the wake of Norman Rosenthal’s discovery, many other psychiatrists conducted extensive research concerning this condition; now, medically referred to as seasonal affective disorder, or simply S.A.D. By working with some of the unfortunate victims of this very real medical condition, new treatments have been found to work in conjunction with various light therapy treatments.

The 10 facts you need to know about S.A.D.

Seasonal affective disorder is a reality. Recognizing the causes and symptoms of the ailment can greatly increase treatment and prevention. Below is a list of the 10 most significant facts about S.A.D.

I. Learning the Causes

Winter

Fact #1: Vitamin D deficiency is a major contributor to winter sadness.

-Once thought to be the sole cause of what many people call “the winter blues”, decreased sunlight exposure is a major contributor to the disorder.

Fact #2: The quality of the air that you breathe on a constant basis is deteriorated in the winter months.

-When it is cold outside, it isn’t likely that you will open up your windows often. The air within any home is only re-circulated and loses its purity and freshness. Essentially, the air becomes full of contaminants.

Fact #3: Diminished exercise habits lead to poor health.

-The chilly weather can cause many people to reduce their exercise habits. Because of this fact, individuals may begin to feel lethargic and unmotivated.

Fact #4: Poor nutrition can make you more susceptible to health problems.

-It is no secret that improper eating habits lead to poor physical condition. Your mental state is highly influenced by your physical well-being.

II. Recognizing the Symptoms

Fact #5: Sufferers of seasonal sadness often do not realize the onset of the disorder.

-The seasonal transition is, obviously, not instantaneous. As the days become shorter and colder, people afflicted may slowly fall into a depression without even knowing that it is happening.

Fact #6: Many reports from those who have experienced the winter blues indicate increased eating, especially foods that contain carbohydrates.

-As depression sets in, an individual’s eating habits may change. Many case studies show an increase in carbohydrate intake. A diet of this nature generally promotes weight gain and increased depression and anxiety.

Fact #7: Reduced exercise due to the weather and depression symptoms can cause a “snowball” effect.

-The cold can deter people from continuing their typical workout routines. Coupled with poor nutrition, a lack of exercise can dramatically increase someone’s susceptibility to S.A.D. Being out of shape can be a catalyst for further sadness; making the condtion increasingly difficult to treat.

III. Implementing Treatment and Prevention

Fact #8: The best treatment to any ailment is taking preventive action.

-By noticing the emergence of depression symptoms, you can take preventive actions to stunt the development of the disorder. If you begin feeling tired or sore, take an inventory of your daily routine. Ask yourself: “What am I doing differently?”

Fact #9: Investing in an air purifier can substantially improve the air quality in your home.

-Many comparison sites can help you in deciding what the best room air filters are. Some air purifiers produce ozone emissions. Others use HEPA filters to remove harmful irritants from the air. Investigate the best rated HEPA filters to make an informed decision.

Fact #10: Ensuring that sunlight is received daily can reduce or eliminate the symptoms associated with S.A.D.

-Professionals that have researched this seasonal disorder agree that one of the best remedies is exposure to sunlight. It is recommended that for at least 15 minutes each day, individuals should make a point of getting some sun.

Taking preventive action can greatly reduce the prospect of being afflicted by the winter blues. Being aware of the causes, symptoms and available treatments is a great start to a happy and healthy holiday season.

Enhance your Blogging Experience with Select Bowser Add-ons and Plugins

This is a guest post by Nadia Jones. If you want to guest post on this blog, check out the guest post guidelines.

Bloggers know that running a blog is not a simple task: it takes a lot of time and effort to ensure that your blog is constantly updated with valuable and unique content and that it’s aesthetically pleasing—aesthetics play a huge role in attracting a strong audience; and as many bloggers may already know, without a strong audience it’s very difficult to earn revenue from your blog(s). But there are certain web browser “add-ons” that can simplify the way you go about running your blog, can help you appear higher in search engine rankings so that you increase your traffic, and can even make the blogging experience more engaging for your readers—and the best part? They’re all free. To learn what these add-ons are, continue reading below.

1. ScribeFire Blog Editor:

scribefire

This add-on, which is designed to “fire up your blogging,” acts as the ultimate organizational tool to maintain your blog(s)—it allows users to post, edit, add tags, write notes and save post drafts all from a designated central area. It even allows users to add photos to your blog(s) by simply dragging and dropping images from your desktop –no need to upload or copy and paste any links. The add-on is available for most of the major web browsers, including Chrome, Firefox and Safari and supports most major blog platforms, including WordPress, Blogger, TypePad, Windows Live Spaces, and Tumblr just to name a few.

2. Zemanata:

zemanata

One of the easiest ways to gain trust from your readers is to post content that is backed by authoritative and reliable sources. This add-on is a convenient tool that simultaneously formulates a list of relatable links, tags and spam-free news articles and supporting images as you type your posts—you can even filter the results to find copyright free content. This way you don’t have to waste precious time scouring search engines to find what you are looking for. This add-on also supports most major blog platforms, including WordPress, Blogger, and Tumblr and works on most of the major web browsers, including Chrome, Firefox and Safari.

3. All-in-One SEO Pack (plugin):

all-in-one-seo-pack

If you decide to only download one add-on designed to improve search engine rankings, this is “the” add-on to have—this free extension helps you do pretty much everything: it automatically generates Meta descriptions and helps you generate keywords; it helps you create titles for the best optimization; it gives you suggestions so that you can create the best page navigation links and canonical URLs; and it even helps you avoid posting duplicate content which can get you in all sorts of trouble with search engines (your site can get suspended and you might just get sued for copyright infringement). And with more than 8 million downloads to date, the plug-in has proven to be effective time and time again. This add-on is unfortunately only available for WordPress users.

4. Tin Eye:

tineye

This add-on is the perfect addition for bloggers who want to improve the quality of their photos. This is how it works: the add-on uses “reverse image” software to locate either the original source of an image you found so that you can give proper credit or check its copyright; or you can upload a poor quality photo to find a higher resolution alternative. This add-on supports all major web browsers.

5. Broken Link Checker (plugin):

broken-link-checker

Ask any SEO expert and they will inform you that one of the major no-no’s is containing broken links in your blog posts. Not only will search engines not file and store pages with broken links (which ultimately harms and weakens your rankings), but your readers may lose trust in your site all together—how reliable do you seem linking to sources that lead to dead, 404 sites? But even if you’re careful about writing the correct HTML coding sometimes sites just expire. Here’s where this particular plug-in comes to the rescue: it monitors all of the content in your blog, including new and old, and regularly checks for broken links found in posts and comments so that you can immediately correct the issue. This add-on is only available for WordPress users.

6. Outbrain Ratings:

outbrain

This add-on, which is technically more of a widget, is great because not only does it allow users to rate your posts as the title suggests (which can help your audience be more engaged with your blog), but it also can suggest other posts that are related to the one they are currently reading—this adds traffic and increases page views to both new and old articles/posts. Like all the others, this widget supports all major blog platforms and web browsers.

7. Translate Gadget:

googletranslate

An excellent way to increase your number of followers is to make yourself accessible to non-English speakers. In order to do this, all you need to do is simply download this add-on which allows your foreign readers to translate your blog content to their native tongue.

8. Google Analytics (plugin):

googleanalytics

Lastly, there is no point in trying to make your blog the most recognizable blog the internet has to offer if you don’t even know if people are visiting your site. With this plug-in however, you will be able to monitor and keep track of all your web traffic so that you can know if all of your hard work is paying off. This plug-in will not only allow you to see outbound clicks and page views associated with each author and category, but it will also give you some great insight into your readers’ behavior—it can show you what kind of content your audience favors and is more likely to read so that you can cater to them. Available for WordPress users.

A video blog (or “Vlog”) is just a video representation of your everyday blog. Users read particular blogs because they either enjoy the personality behind the content, or they’re interested in the topic being discussed or because they can relate to article. Your video blog should do exactly the same.

2. Be Engaging & Accessible
Much like in the blogosphere, viewers don’t want to watch video content they can’t connect with. Here are a few pointers to establish real engagement with your audience; ask questions that users can respond to, discuss issues and subjects that tie in with your topic niche, and always try to address your audience in a way a friendly and familiar way.

3. Be Useful & Up To Date
When exciting news hits the web, Internet users will be undoubtedly searching for it. If your vlog is constantly up to date with topical news in your niche you’ll stand a better chance of getting users to check out your video blog.

4. Be Personal & Human
Blogs by nature convey personality through the uses of playful text and images, and your vlog should do the same. The benefit of video blogs is that they allow your audience to see you, hear you and relate to how your body language and on-screen actions. By letting your audience see you in this way will give your vlog an essential personal feel to it. Always be yourself, trying to be something you’re not will be surprisingly obvious to viewers and they won’t like you for it.

5. Check Out Other Vlogs
No one becomes a master of video blogging overnight. It takes time, practice and dedication to become comfortable and confident on camera. By watching other vlogs and seeing how other users have changed from their early episodes, you’ll pick up some handy tips and gain confidence in your early performances. Learning from other users will help you be able to make sure your vlog tick all of the right boxes.

6. Always Aim To Inform, Educate & Entertain
There are 3 essential golden rules when it comes to creating video content these are to inform, educate and entertain your audience. If you are able to hit these 3 areas on the head you’ll be well on your way to creating a great video production. It’s quite a task to tick all 3 boxes, but by hitting at least one or two each time you create a video will really help to benefit your video blog’s.

7. Give It All You’ve Got
The more time and effort you can put into each and every video blog the better you can make them. Spending time script writing, planning your shot, filming your vlog, editing it and producing it will really put your video blog ahead of the pack. You’d be surprised how many vlogs are slap-dash affairs and their creators wonder why they don’t get viewed or shared. Always give it everything you’ve got no matter if it’s your first vlog or your hundredth.

Summary
Just like in the blogging world there’s tough competition to battle out there, but by taking on board these pointers your video blog will stand a much greater chance of succeeding online.

VPS Hosting – The Advantages

This is a guest post by Usman Nasir. If you want to guest post on this blog, check out the guest post guidelines.

VPS (Virtual private server) hosting plays a major role between shared hosting and dedicated hosting. The cost of VPS hosting is much low when compared with dedicated web hosting. Virtual private server is commonly used to illustrate the fundamental strategy which is meant for special use of customers. The main advantage of VPS hosting is it permits the users to build “sandboxes”. This option is only feasible when in a single physical server is contained two different VPS servers (virtual private servers).

The consumers are able to access another websites with the help of this sandbox without even directly affecting the same. The VPS web hosting best features include its quick access pace, all information and data safety as the servers don’t have to physically share, augmented server control and lot more. In business it plays a major role where stronger, accessible hosting services are required.

VPS fundamentally works by “virtual partitions” creation on the server. By this it allows each account to have its own server space without disturbing others who are hosted there.
The other advantages of the Virtual private server hosting include flexibility, stability, augmented performance, affordable price, and dedicated resources accessibility.

vps-virtual-private

Flexibility of VPS:
With this benefit of VPS you can select your own operating system for server operation. Windows, Linux, are some of the “operating system” options which you can choose. In case you are not well versed in computer you must select the “managed VPS” solution. With this you can still handle all the technical features. More so for those who want to have complete power over their “virtual server” setting “unmanaged VPS” can be a great choice.

Stability of VPS:
Stability is one of the main benefits of VPS web hosting. The traffic and other activities from the other web-sites can badly affect your website performance in of case shared hosting, if it is on the same server. However in case of VPS hosting due to its stability it ensures that other accounts on the server don’t disturb your web-sites.

Augmented Functioning:
In comparison to shared hosting, the VPS hosting can help your web-site experience augmented functioning. This advantage can be used as users don’t have to share the resources of server with other several hosted accounts which will help your web-site viewers to benefit from quicker load-times. If your website doesn’t load fast then there is a chance of your prospective clients from changing to your competitor’s site.

VPS affordable prices:
VPS hosting offers good plans for all businesses at affordable prices. There are many web hosting service providers who offer great plans at much less price. Go through those plans carefully and select the one which best suits the hosting needs.

Dedicated Resources accessibility:
With Virtual private server you can get your own resources for your “own server”. With VPS hosting server you are able to get access to a quicker speed of CPU, more disk space for storage, and extra RAM capacity which is not feasible with shared hosting.

30 Minute Blogs – Content Writing Made Quick and Easy

This is a guest post by Michael Scottsdale. If you want to guest post on this blog, check out the guest post guidelines.

If you’re planning a career in blog and article writing, learning to write content quickly helps you take in more assignments while giving yourself more time to spend for friends and family. The main problem with being a writer is that I found myself spending more time writing and less time for anything else. For those planning to take up writing as a full time profession or having difficulties balancing their writing profession with their personal lives, here are a few tips to help us become more efficient.

alarm-clock

Keep a list of ideas
One of the first things that I noticed was that a great deal of the time I spent in front of my laptop was trying to come up with ideas for my blog. I found that having a pen and paper beside me all the time was a convenient way of writing these ideas down. Mental notes are discouraged as these ideas disappear as soon as easily as we come up with them.

Stay Focused
A simple sentence or phrase is all it takes to have a good idea or topic. Stay within the boundaries of your topic. Creativity will always be a must have for any writer but this could be distracting especially when your ideas are flying off the topic. If you’re trying to tell something, tell it at the first paragraph, the body and reinforce it at the last paragraph. Try to master this technique and you’ll be on your way to reaching that 30 minute blog. It helps you eliminate 60 percent of the writing workload.

Bullets
Bullets are an easy way of creating a basic outline for your article. These may represent points for starting out a new paragraph. You can then build on these to create content. It also helps you give a brief overview of the finished article and provides a solid anchor for building content.

Write before editing
Try to get the word count up as much as possible in as little time as possible. Checking your grammar and spelling could be done after accomplishing the article. Get those ideas down into writing before they escape your mind. Editing on the go could cost you some precious minutes and destroys the writing flow. It’s definitely easier to proof edit your writing than spend minutes coming up with content.

Short, Simple, Informative
Keep your blogs short and simple. Good blog posts are ideally around 300 to 500 words long. This is long enough for search engines to pick up while short enough to capture your reader’s attention. Longer content could be broken down into two articles which could be posted the following day. This makes you more efficient and gives you a much needed breather.

Use Photos and Images
Images help reinforce the content while providing some much needed color and life into your blogs. This is also an excellent way of “filling” in those spaces. Placing a photo or two stretches out your blog making it appear longer than it seems. Photos and images also have a story of their own and could increase the overall content of your blog.

Michael Scottsdale is a professional writer and currently works as a consultant for online businesses. When he’s not writing for Intermedia’s Hosted Exchange, he could be found blogging about simple tips on how people could take advantage of the internet’s numerous business opportunities.
