7 Mistakes New Bloggers Make and How to Avoid Them

This is a guest post by Lauren Bailey. If you want to guest post on this blog, check out the guest post guidelines.

In some fields, the idea that it’s necessary to learn from your mistakes is a wonderful idea. In education, children learn from their mistakes in a safe environment. In flight simulators, pilots learn from their mistakes while safely planted on the ground. And athletes learn from their mistakes on the practice field in preparation for the big game.

But how can bloggers learn from mistakes without facing the consequences? Unfortunately, there’s really no way to make a mistake on a blog and have it go unnoticed. And in this competitive and fast-paced environment, a mistake can seriously hurt your traffic numbers, advertising revenue, and search engine results standings.

Instead of learning from our own mistakes, we can learn from the mistakes other beginning bloggers have made. Hopefully, this list can be extremely helpful to you; however, if you have made a mistake that’s not on this list, please share it with us! We could all learn from it.

blogging-mistakes-answered

1. Plagiarize Or Duplicate Your Content!
Whether they realize it or not, some bloggers plagiarize content. Maybe they don’t mean to cause any harm, but technically this is stealing other people’s work. Other bloggers do steal content on purpose in order to boost traffic!

In any case, it’s a good rule of thumb that if you do blog about someone else’s content or include portions of that content, then you should attribute that source and link back to the other person’s blog.

2. Forget About SEO
One of the basics of good blogging is to know about Search Engine Optimization strategies. New bloggers don’t often know about these, so they won’t include keywords or meta tags in their posts. They don’t realize the importance of backlinks. Then they wonder why they don’t get any traffic.

Avoid this mistake by looking up SEO strategies. Read about what SEO really means. Read Google’s official blog to understand how they manage search engine results and algorithms.

3. Write ‘All Over The Place’
Have you ever read posts by a blogger who can’t seem to make up his or her mind as to what to write about? The new blogger writes about his pets, the latest baseball score, some two-year old internet meme involving cats, and the occasional gadget. How frustrating was it to read? Very frustrating, I bet. This is a common mistake new bloggers make: they can’t seem to focus on a specific topic, and because of this, they’re writing is ‘all over the place.’

Avoid this mistake by knowing exactly what topics you’re going to cover in your blog and follow through on this commitment so that you’re readers know what to expect when they visit your blog.

4. Blog Once Every Blue Moon
Of course, new bloggers also get frustrated with how much work it takes to blog successfully. Because of this, they forget to blog. They get involved in other things. They blog once in a blue moon.

Avoid this mistake by following a regular blogging schedule. Even if you get blocked, you have to force yourself to blog every day. Blogging takes discipline.

5. Clutter Their Blog With Ads
These are perhaps some of the most annoying blogs out there. New bloggers think they can immediately monetize their blog, so they put up all these ads that take away from the content. They might see some profit initially, but once their traffic dries up, those profits will too.

Be careful in the kinds of ads you use and how you place them. The best blogs incorporate ads right into the template in such a way that they are not intrusive, but still manage to get good clicks.

6. Let Spam Dominate The Comments
New bloggers often don’t understand the concept of spam comments; I can’t count how many times I’ve seen a blogger respond to a spam comment! The terrible thing about spam comments is they get in the way of serious discussion. They may make a post appear popular, but really they just scare serious readers away.

Look up a great spam management application. Many blogging platforms have these built in, but you might find a third-party widget that gets the job done well. In any case, make sure you watch your comments section; even the best filters let some spam through.

7. Ignore Their Readers
New bloggers don’t often realize how important it is to use their blog as a way to communicate with others, especially their readers. Readers read blogs in order to get information and make connections with other bloggers. Sometimes new bloggers overlook this fact; they don’t realize that the blogging community is made up of all sorts of interesting people with whom they should interact.

Don’ t make this mistake! Respond to emails and comments. If you’d like, accept guest posts. Do everything you can to cultivate relationships with your readers! The connections you make will pay off, believe me.

10 Ways to Effectively Run Your Business Outside the Office

In today’s mobile society, it’s not uncommon for business owners and professionals to travel extensively. While away from the office, however, it’s still necessary to keep business processes flowing smoothly. There are many ways you can effectively run your business when you travel.

mobile-phone-office-travel

1. Make the most of your mobile devices and applications. Not only is wireless network adapters handy, but when coupled with a wireless hotspot, they allow you to connect to the Internet virtually anywhere. These can be used with your mobile phone, iPod, laptop and more to keep you connected.

2. Use your digital camera to share photos that will help clarify instructions to support staff and co-workers. This is an ideal way to verify model numbers, give a clear example of a broken part, and send needed data to the home office and more.

3. Track deliveries and packages while away from the office via the Internet. By knowing your tracking number, you can easily access delivery information online and reassure a customer regarding an order, or verify a shipment’s proposed arrival time before calling the vendor to inquire.

4. Hire a virtual assistant to handle some of the routine tasks you need to do every day. This could include answering email, publishing a company newsletter, placing supply orders and more. The costs are reasonable and the assistance can be invaluable.

5. Take advantage of sites like Google Docs or DropBox to share files and documents, or store them for easy access wherever you are.

6. Use an online or iPhone app like RightSignature that allows you to digitally sign documents via your cell phone or Internet connection. This eliminates the need for faxing or printing and speeds up the process as well.

7. Set up QR Codes, two-dimensional codes that allow someone to use a QR scanner app to access additional information you supply. This is ideal when you want to provide additional product data, discount codes or even more detailed contact information.

8. Offer online versions of your product catalogs and brochures so customers can access the information without you needing to carry a briefcase full of printed materials.

9. Use your iPad or laptop for sales presentations. You can even provide the information on a CD or via email if your customer is computer savvy enough to access the information easily. This eliminates the need for carrying printed materials and lessens the chance of them being damaged by a spill or other mishap.

10. Use an online backup service such as iDrive to keep a backup of all your files and documents online. If needed, you can access the online version via Restore and know that you’ll always have the information you need on hand.

These are only a few of the many ways you can manage your business while traveling. Make use of those that work well for you and eliminate some of the stress associated with being away from the office when there is work to be done and projects to oversee.

How to Tether Your 3G Phone to Your iPad 2

This is a guest post by Kelly Austin. If you want to guest post on this blog, check out the guest post guidelines.

The iPad 2 is a great improvement over the original iPad in many ways, yet the additional cost of integrated 3G connectivity is not a premium many want to pay – especially when they are already paying for that same service on their smartphones. Luckily, there are workarounds and it is possible to tether your iPad 2 to your 3G (or 4G) capable phone. Keep reading to find out how.

Depending on your phone’s operating system, you will have to use a different workaround. Listed below are the tested and working methods for various phone operating systems. If your phone’s OS is not listed, it may not (yet) be possible for you to tether to your iPad.

ipadtether

Nokia N Series: If you own an N series phone from Nokia running on the Symbian platform, you will need to download the Joiku Hotspot application (found at: http://www.joikushop.com). Once downloaded and installed on your phone, simply launch the application and follow the on-screen instructions to create a wireless hot spot. From here, you simply connect to it with your iPad as you would any other mobile wifi hotspot and you are free to roam the internet!

Android OS: For any Android based phone such as the HTC Hero, you will need to download the Android WiFi Tether application (found at: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/). Download and install the application to your phone (note: your phone needs to be rooted in order for this method to work). Launch the application and follow the on-screen instructions to setup either a mobile hotspot or tether via bluetooth to your iPad. Again, connecting to the hotspot is the same as connecting to any wireless network. Note: For newer Android based phones such as the Evo 4G there is no need to download any 3rd party applications as the wireless hotspot feature comes pre-installed on the device.

Windows Mobile: For devices using the Windows Mobile platform, you will need to download the WMWifiRouter application (found at: http://www.wmwifirouter.com/). Download and install the application on your device and launch it once installed. Follow the on-screen instructions to set up a portable hotspot from your device and connect to it with your iPad as you would any other wireless network.

iPhone: For iPhone owners, you will need to download the MyWi app (found at: http://www.rockyourphone.com/index.php/mywi.html). (Note: This requires a jail-broken iPhone in order to install and will not work on a stock device). Once downloaded and installed on your iPhone, launch the app and follow the on-screen instructions to create a portable hotspot from your iPhone. This app will also allow you to tether through bluetooth or USB. Once set up, simply connect to the wifi network as you would any other wireless network on your iPad.

With these options, it is possible for almost anyone with a 3G or 4G capable smartphone to tether their iPad 2 and have internet connectivity almost anywhere they go. Please be aware that tethering through your device will incur any data charges stipulated by your carrier according to your contract. Please check with your carrier to clarify any potential charges that may be imposed by the use of tethering before doing so.

2. Navigate to Google Verification under Settings on the left sidebar.
3. Click “Start Verification”.
4. Follow the authentication prompts. Click “Grant access” when you are prompted to give your blog access to the Google Site Verification API.

Buying External Hard Drive ?

Most of us using internet will fall short of storage space quickly. Obviously it happened with me shortly after I got my Dell Desktop and I was already in search of a good external storage device.

Old Story!
On 22-Dec-2010 I bought “Western Digital‘s” 1TB (Tera Byte) External HDD (Hard Disk) for Rs. 3700 + 5% VAT
I’m sure, now the rate might have gone still low, so I think it’s a good idea to get an External Hard Disk to take backup of your important Data.

western-digital-hard-disk-cover

western-digital-hard-disk

western-digital-hard-disk-sideview

Content of the package I bought:
USB2.0 external hard disk.
USB cable.
AC adapter.
Quick Install Guide.

Compatibility:
Formatted NTF for Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7
Requires reformatting for Mac OS X Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.

Physical Dimensions
Height 8.02 Inches
Length 1.42 Inches
Width 4.90 Inches
Weight 2.24 Pounds

Metric
Height 203.82 mm
Length 36.14 mm
Width 124.68 mm
Weight 1.02 kg

As used for storage capacity, one megabyte (MB) = one million bytes, one gigabyte (GB) = one billion bytes, and one terabyte (TB) = one trillion bytes. Total accessible capacity varies depending on operating environment. As used for buffer or cache, one megabyte (MB) = 1,048,576 bytes. As used for transfer rate or interface, megabyte per second (MB/s) = one million bytes per second, megabit per second (Mb/s) = one million bits per second, and gigabit per second (Gb/s) = one billion bits per second.

Warranty
And not to forget, it comes with 3 years warranty.

Problem and Solution
So far I have heard complaint about their AC adapter, which is odd shaped and gets disconnected in the middle of a transfer! Thankfully, I have not experienced it(I waited as long as 4 months in testing) yet. But if you are experiencing such problems, then simply get a different kind of adapter and use it to plug your hard disk.

5 Steps to Organizing and Optimizing Your Blog

This is a guest post by Kenneth McCall. If you want to guest post on this blog, check out the guest post guidelines.

As a person who has worked in the self-storage industry for years, I’ve come to understand the importance of neatness and organization. I’ve seen my share of well-organized and well-maintained storage units. I’ve also seen units where I’ve opened up the storage unit door only to be overwhelmed by a room full of chaos.

Avoiding Blog Clutter
As an avid reader of blogs, I often get the same feeling when I read a blog as I do when I open up a storage unit door. Some blogs are a pleasure to read. The subject matter is clear, the points are thoughtful and concise, and the message is consistent. In other words, the blog is well organized and well written. However, others remind me very much of the cluttered storage unit. The message is disorganized, the flow is uneven, and the writer’s thoughts ramble all over the place.

Which type of blog would you rather read?

organized

When people first open a door to any establishment, and the initial appearance is one of orderliness, they feel good about where they are and what they see. If they are able to find what they are looking for, they feel rewarded and are eager to return again and again. People react the same way to blogs. If the blog is well organized and a person finds what he is looking for, he is likely to jump on board…and then come back for more. So how exactly does a writer go about avoiding blog clutter? Here are five steps to keeping your blogs organized and clutter-free:

Step 1: Formulate your subject matter well. OK, so you know what you are going to write about, but how well do you know the topic? Do your research! Preparation is half the battle.
Formulate the exact question or questions you want your blog to answer. Then start writing down everything you know or learn about your topic that relates to these questions. Brainstorm if you must. Include everything that comes across your mind and everything you found in your research. You may not use all of it in your blog but that’s OK. You will have the information you need in front of you and you will have reviewed the topic in your mind. Now you are ready to organize that information.

Step 2: Construct the outline for your blog. Most blogs are like sandwiches: an introductory paragraph or two, the meat in the middle, and a wrap-up at the end. The introduction usually gives your readers the answer to the subject question(s) right away and then the โ€œmeatโ€ explains the reasons for this answer. Most often, these reasons are in the form of bullet points (or a list). Jot down the titles of these bullet points. Let’s say there are five of them. Now you have the skeletal outline of your blog: an introduction, five bullet points, and a conclusion—seven sections in all. So take every piece of information you wrote down in step 1 and, one by one, place it in whichever of these sections it best fits. You will end up with seven sections, each one populated with several pieces of information that you can use to write about that section. Now, do the actual writing, or more precisely, let the blog write itself – one section at a time.

Step 3: Make it easy to read. One of the reasons you use bullet points or lists is because they catch the reader’s eye and are easy to scan. You should carry the same philosophy
throughout your blog – make it easy and pleasurable to read. Express your thoughts in a simple straightforward way. Inject the prose with humor and don’t be afraid to let your personality shine through. If your blog is interesting, people will read it!

Step 4: Don’t lose your focus. Sometimes it’s easy to get carried away and start to ramble. Don’t fall into this trap. Focus on your message and stay on point. Make sure that every sentence you write within a certain section of your post is fully related to the point you are trying to make in that section. Nobody wants to read a long-winded ramble. Get to the point and then move on!

Step 5: (When you think you are done) Read, re-read, and then re-read again! Proofreading is essential to anything you write and blogs are no exception. It works even better when you
step away from it for an hour or two and then go back and proofread. You will catch silly mistakes, faulty spelling, and grammatical errors. But even more importantly you will be putting yourself in the shoes of your readers. You can see if the content is clear, easy to read, and easy to understand. You will be able to see if the sequencing is logical and how smoothly each section flows into the next. And you can also tell whether your blog is interesting and captivating enough to hold a reader’s attention. If not, go back and keep tweaking until it looks just right.

Blog clutter is easy to avoid. The key is to not let the clutter build up in the first place. If you plan and organize your blog from the outset, your blog will be like a storage unit with neat shelves and a place where everything belongs. Make your readers feel good about your blogs. Avoid the clutter and you will get them coming back for more.

Fewer and Better Ads in Gmail

Who likes irrelevant ads ? If you have EVER observed ads in Gmail, you could have seen some irrelevant ads and that might have made you install some adons to remove ads from your GMail or you might have started developing a sense of ad blindness.

But Google Gmail team is taking more efforts to make those ads as relevant and useful as possible.

With the introduction of priority mail, Gmail algorithms can now track what’s important mail for you and what’s not. And they also know what goes to your inbox, and what label you apply to your mails and what kind of messages are marked as SPAM.

GMail intelligently using these signals to track your interests, tastes and will start showing lesser and more relevant ads which will make sense to you.
And you may have to overcome your ad blindness, as these ads may start giving you coupon codes / discount codes from your local store for the things which you are interested in.

Ex: If you’re exchanging mails with your friends about gifting flowers for your girl friend for her upcoming birthday, then GMail algorithm may track your interest and may start showing discount coupon for ordering fresh flowers from your local flower store, for your girl friend.

Some years back I had seen people complaining about these ads reading the personal emails! lol [But back then, it was a serious issue]. So here is Google’s small disclaimer:

As always, ads in Gmail are fully automated-no humans read your messages- and no messages or personally identifiable information about you is shared with advertisers.

Gmail-improved-ads-coupons

And as always, you can enable or disable this feature by visiting your GMail accounts Settings -> General Tab -> Importance signals for ads.

This feature is also enabled in your Google Apps email accounts. It’s interesting to see that, this feature is enabled by default, once it is rolled over to your account.
