I have a few social icons on the posts for users to share, but they are small and don't take to much space. I also cleaned up my sidebar and just have a RSS subscribe, recent posts, google search, some banners and then popular posts (nothing more). I have however put some widgets in my footer at the bottom, takes less space and give a better overall look. I also use to show my tweets in a widget, but removed it as it does not really benefit my blog in anyway or form. Some nice points you listed.
